Level: Beginner

This introductory level course will help you develop skills and sensitivity to building smooth and effective gradations between colors.

Gradations in mosaics are quite different from gradations in painting or digital renderings. Mosaic gradations use the principle of step-by-step transitions and optical mixing of colors.

In this course you will learn how to:

  • Differentiate between tonal values of tiles.
  • Build monochrome (one color) gradations in one and multiple rows.
  • Create gradations using two tones.
  • Explore color wheel and how to create color schemes for gradations.
  • Use tints and shades.
  • Use optical mixing and proportional distribution of colors to create a third color.
  • Explore a variety of alternative ways in creating subtle gradations through texture, reflectivity, size and tilt of tesserae.
  • Activate an interstice space while creating a gradation.
